DISH OF THE WEEK: Folded Cheese Burger in a Pita at MIZNON

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

In New York City, we have the famous pizza fold. When you eat a slice in this city, you have to pick it up and fold it in half. It keeps things neat and is the most efficient way of eating pizza while walking down the street.

But I have yet to see anyone pick up a burger and apply the same method. Until now. Sort of.

Miznon is one of my favorite additions to Chelsea Market. The Israeli fast food-esque storefront features lots of grilled vegetables and hearty pitas. One thing that is surprising to see at a Middle Eastern spot (but less so at a fast food joint) is a cheeseburger. Here, it’s served in a pita and folded in half.

This sandwich was one of the more difficult dishes I’ve ever had to photograph. The above doesn’t necessarily do it justice. That’s why you have to come here and see it for yourself.

Smashed flat, the meaty patty has lots of char and beefy flavors. On the first few bites, you get the simplicity of that meat along with some griddled white cheddar. It would be great with a knife and fork, but then you get down into the actual pita, which is fluffy and soft, and there is even more going on. Dollops of garlic aioli and bright tangy pickles bring you into another world. A world where things just keep getting more delicious.

It’s a very unique way to eat a burger – some might argue it should have a different name. But there it is. Perhaps if enough New Yorkers try it out, everybody will soon be picking up those patties, folding them in half, and walking down the street with them. Price: $12.75
