DISH OF THE WEEK: Broccoli Salad at EMMY SQUARED

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Do people still make New Year’s resolutions? I truly forgot about that concept when a friend of mine who owns an ice cream shop told me January is slow because people are still holding onto their health goals. I guess I have just surrendered to the fact that I’m going to eat what I want to eat.

And that’s truly why I ordered a salad at a pizza place known for their hearty decadent pies. I just thought the Broccoli salad sounded really good. And it was.

Emmy Squared in the East Village is part of the ever expanding empire that started with Emily in Brooklyn. In addition to wood-fired pizza, they are now doing grilled pizza, iconic burgers, and Detroit-style square pies. All things that your doctor probably wishes you never ate – especially when trying to keep some resolutions.

But you can balance all of that gluttony with this beautiful plate of dressed vegetables. The raw broccoli is chopped into bite-sized pieces and tossed with peanuts, crisp radishes, and a sweet tangy miso-soy dressing that hints at Japanese peanut butter. And those slices on top were not raw french fries as you might expect at this house of clogged arteries, but actually sweet crisp pears.

While I did like their cheesy puffy square pizzas, it’s actually the bright and crisp broccoli salad that I’ve been craving ever since. I guess It’s ok that I forgot about a New Year’s resolution since I already eat my veggies. Price: $12

  1. That sounds like such a great combo! I love broccoli salads but they seem to be drenched in mayo more often than not, the peanuts in here sound fantastic
