Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
SADLY, GRAND REPUBLIC COCKTAIL CLUB IS NOW CLOSED.
So I cheat a little bit. My first Dish of the Week every year is usually a cocktail that I tasted on New Year’s Eve. So it’s technically a dish from last year since it was consumed before the strike of midnight. But I’m sure it was still in my bloodstream when the ball dropped, so just go with it.
Normally on New Year’s Eve we hang out in the East Village but this year we decided to come to Greenpoint in the pouring rain to check out some neighborhood bars that we don’t usually get to explore.
I was very impressed with Grand Republic Cocktail Club. It doesn’t get more off-the-beaten path in North Brooklyn than this. Hidden at the end of Greenpoint Avenue, it truly feels like an old sailor’s bar but with young hipsters ogling over the menu of unique craft cocktail creations.
My Smoke Over Brooklyn featured many of the flavors I crave in a tipple. Smoky mezcal, sweet cinnamon bitters, a pinch of salt, and a hint of bitterness from locally roasted dark chocolate. Although no dairy was present, the combination gave off a milky rich quality. Think smoky boozy chocolate milk and you’ve got the idea.
And it would have tasted the same in 2018 or 2019, I promise. Price: $13
