DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: The Southside at SOUTHSIDE COFFEE

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I saved this little treasure until now so that I could make it the final Dish of the Week of the year. Not only has it been surprisingly memorable since I put my mouth around it, but eggs are symbolic of a new life and I’m spinning it to mean a happy new year.

You’ll also notice that this is listed on my list of Top Ten dishes of the year being released this week. It was really that good. Especially because on the surface it seems like just another breakfast sandwich.

I first learned about the neighborhood spot Southside Coffee from one of my fellow tour guides at Urban Adventures. We had a short round-up video of everybody’s favorite breakfast and she mentioned this namesake egg sandwich.

Lucky enough to find myself in the neighborhood at breakfast time, I made a beeline for this place and was blown away by the Southside sandwich.

Many of the components were expected, but high quality and perfectly prepared, like the fluffy organic eggs, the tender ham from Heritage Meats, and the sharp Cabot cheddar cheese. The one that was not expected is what brought this entire masterpiece together. It’s something called breakfast mayo.

Breakfast mayo is a sweet/tangy/addicting condiment made from eggs and oil, sure, but also maple syrup, Dijon mustard, and coffee grounds. This needs to become a staple in everyone’s home – it could make anything taste good.

I hope this egg sandwich brings you and yours a fresh start and lots of health in the New Year. And if you find yourself having any tough times in 2019, just book it over to Southside and watch those troubles melt away. Price: $9
