100 BEST ’18: MOLE DE PIAXTLA at CASA ENRIQUE

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2018…

Most of the Mexican immigrants in New York hail from the town of Puebla. So while we are a little lacking with great Mexican food from places like Oaxaca and Yucatan, we have plenty of great Pueblan food. That’s where this molé from one of the best Mexican spots in the city comes from.  The one dish not to miss at Casa Enrique is the expertly prepared Molé de Piaxtla. Tender chicken pieces hide underneath a dark, rich, earthy sauce comprised of a complex mixing of dry peppers, almonds, raisins, plantains, sesame seeds, and of course, chocolate.  Price: $23
