My search for the best cheesecake in New York continues….

Bushwick is not exactly the neighborhood you’d expect to find an old Italian bakery. Up until recently this area has been mostly a Latin American community. And the new hipsters have not yet chosen cannolis and sfogliatella to gentrify. Beer, coffee, chocolate, bread, sure. But with a few exceptions, they’ve left Italian pastries alone.

But here sits Circo since 1945. And when I found myself out here recently to visit a distillery and taste some vegan Ethiopian food, I was pleasantly surprised.

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

She’s a favorite of both Oprah and Tom Colicchio, but now pastry chef Umber Ahmad is going to be a favorite of all New Yorkers. She opened her first official bakery this year in thbe West Village and it’s full of fantastic goodies. My favorite was the addicting namesake bars, which is sort of like an oatmeal cookie bar on crack – with pecans, chocolate chips, baked together with an unstoppable brown butter salted caramel sauce. It’s soft, rich, and impossible to stop eating. Price: $3.50

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I have already sang the praises of Two Little Red Hens’ excellent New York-style cheesecake on this blog. But the bakery is most known (and racks up huge lines) for their cupcakes. Many people claim that these are the best in the city. Magnolia who?

I mentioned the cupcakes in my cheesecake review, but never gave them the credit they deserve. Well, I was on the Upper East Side recently and noticed that they had a special holiday flavor. I’m always a sucker for those and it was actually the best cupcake I’ve ever tasted from the shop. And it’s only available during the most wonderful time of the year. (more…)

img_0681 I’m doing something I’ve never done before on this blog. And that’s because I just came back from an adventure that was unlike anything I’ve ever done before in my life. For six weeks of the summer, I was travelling around Europe meeting wonderful locals and eating amazing food. And I got paid for it!!

The real reason I was there was to make videos on some Urban Adventure tours. Stay tuned for 14 new episodes of Locals Know. But until then, to whet your appetite (and for me to re-live my incredible dream-come-true journey), I’ve decided to document the food I ate in each city.

So instead of picking just one dish of the week this week, I’m going to pick 14 – one for each city I visited.

DOUGH, 305 Franklin Avenue (at Lafayette Avenue), Clinton Hill, Brooklyn

If you’d asked me to tell you about Dough, the growing New York business from chef Fany Gerson, I would have told you that they make the absolute best doughnuts in the city. Big, yeasty, and inventive – they’re everything you want a doughnut to be.

But if you asked me to talk more about their food, I would have looked at you with confusion. What else could Dough possibly do? (more…)

When I was in Portugal last year, I had at least one (sometimes two) egg tarts a day. It’s just what you did. They were sweet, creamy satisfying yellow tarts with a crisp pastry shell and a browned top layer. And they’re a ubiquitous pastry on the Iberian penninsula.

The Portuguese love them so much that they brought them to their colony of Macau and the tarts quickly spread to Hong Kong and the mainland. Now you’ll find them just as often in certain parts of China and Chinatowns as you would in Portugal itself.
