PIZZA REVIEW: NY Pizza Suprema

My search for the best pizza in New York continues….

Ask any New Yorker for a favorite place to eat and odds are it won’t be anywhere near Penn Station. That’s why I’ve always been a bit unsure of NY Pizza Suprema.

It’s steps from the total nightmare that is the hub of commuter trains in Midtown. But it is also considered in certain circles as the best slice of pizza in Manhattan. How could that be??

So one day I had to catch a NJ Transit train and had a few extra minutes before I had to make a mad dash to board. I couldn’t think of anything better to cram into 10 minutes than a slice of pizza.

I was immediately impressed with the ambiance of New York Pizza Suprema. It felt like the old pizza shops of yesterday (that being the 70’s and 80’s) with retro light fixtures and narrow booths. I didn’t stick around to take it all in but I did order a rather large slice of cheese.

This pizza started getting acclaim because a fellow food blogger (Slice Harvester) rated it a perfect score on his sampling of all the slices in Manhattan. Now I have not quite dedicated my cholesterol levels to that commitment yet but I have had a good deal of slices in my career and this one is good for what it is.

It’s nothing fancy but is a great example of that classic 80’s/90’s era cheap gas oven slice of pizza. The crust is thin as expected and surprisingly very crisp. Cheese is the main focus here and it’s plentiful and fresh with a well-rounded tangy tomato sauce underneath.

Really, who would have thought that one of the city’s best classic slices of pizza is hiding behind the eye sore that is Penn Station? It just goes to show you never know where good food in this city might be hiding.

Is NY Pizza Suprema the best pizza in NY? I’m not sure I completely give it that crown but it’s one of the best versions of a cheap slice in Manhattan and for that it gets a solid 9 out of 10.

  1. I was actually here a few weeks ago and had no idea they were so well known! I had just gotten back to nyc on the amtrack after being out of town several days and went in looking for garlic knowts. I was surprised and thrilled they have a vegan slice! It had the best sauteed mushrooms on it with some other veggies and a classic chewy tasty crust, i was very happy and will make a point to return
