DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Kranjska Klobasa at KLOBASARNA in Ljubljana, Slovenia

My new favorite European city is Ljubljana. Of course, dating back to the 13th century, it’s not new at all. Yet it somehow is still considered “undiscovered” or even “unheard of” by most Americans.

I urge you to check out this beautiful European capital and spend a few days here.

And while here, of course, you’ll eat well. Most restaurants in summertime require reservations because while Americans don’t often know this Slovenian capital, other European travelers certainly do.

One place you don’t need to make reservations at is a little fast food spot in the heart of the city called Klobasarna.

Klobasarna has some tables out front, but it’s easy enough to take their offerings to go and even eat it while taking in the sites on both sides of the Ljubljanica River. It might not be how the locals eat it, but it won’t last too long on your walk.

The specialty of this spot is the Carniolan (or Kranjska) sausage, a very delicious link distinctly from Slovenia, but resembling a small kielbasa. It’s comprised of pork and bacon giving it a very hearty smoky flavor.

The scrumptious sausage (which comes in orders of half or whole) has hints of fat among its rich meat filling and is served with a giant rustic roll, some fantastic mustard, and my favorite condiment: horseradish.

It’s a dish not to be missed in a city that has to be seen to be believed. Book your trip before the word gets out and it’s no longer affordable or manageable. And you’ll thank me later. Price: 5.50-9.50 EUR
