DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Grilled Mushroom Salad at BANGKOK SUPPER CLUB

It seems like every other week I’m documenting either a Thai restaurant or a mushroom dish. I tend to play favorites. Well, this week I’m bringing those favorites together.

Bangkok Supper Club is one of the more difficult reservations to get. It’s definitely possible but takes a bit of panning and late night Resy stalking. The reservations open up at midnight 30 days prior and they go fast. We played by the rules and snagged a post-theater dinner.

The old Fatty Crab space has been given a facelift by the Fish Cheeks team and wonderful servers help you narrow down their expensive, but very exciting Bangkok-inspired menu.

In addition to the grilled mushroom salad (see below), we had the beautiful and refreshing Hokkaido Scallop Ceviche covered with shaved watermelon granita and a rich and spicy Chilean Sea Bass with Chakram Curry. All were deeply flavorful and exquisitely presented.

But it was that meaty grilled mushroom salad that was our most memorable bite of the night. With two grilled little gem nubs as a base, the filling salad is comprised of a range of umami laden charred shrooms, lots of cilantro, and crunchy coconut chips. A coconut cilantro dressing spiked with Thai basil tames the smoky richness and brightens the dish up.

They had me at Thai food and mushrooms, but they brought it home with a fantastic dish in a very exciting venue. Price: $19

  1. oh man, you’re really dating me with the Fatty Crab mentioning. :*( That restaurant was the ‘It’ child at that contemporary. Wonder where the chefs are now.
