DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: The Truff Burger at SMACKING BURGER

Hidden, secret food and drink establishments will always be fun and exciting. But an interesting location is not enough to sustain a place.

Shacking Burger is the newest food establishment in the unlikeliest of places. It’s in a gas station on the outskirts of Chelsea. Not only is a prepared food restaurant in a gas station in Manhattan a surprise, so is a gas station in Manhattan.

One of the last remaining central gas stations in the borough, this iconic Mobil is now the home to a legit smashed burger destination.

There are a handful of burger choices here, but the one that called my name most was The Truff Burger, which contains many of the words I crave on a burger (but rarely find nowadays): Swiss Cheese, Grilled Mushrooms, Caramelized Onions

It also featured a creamy truffle sauce (hence the name). These ingredients topped a pretty expertly charred, grilled patty and were sandwiched between a typical potato bun. It was messy and deeply flavorful and one of the better burgers I’ve had in a while.

I’ve been to gas station fast food spots across the country before, but it causes quite a buzz in NYC for many reasons. And I can say the buzz is worth it. Price: $9.99
