PIZZA REVIEW in New York: Unregular Pizza

Founded by a Roman chef during the pandemic, Unregular Pizza has built quite a following thanks to social media and the chef’s bartering skills. The owner traded pizzas for other food with the community during the pandemic.

Tike Tok and Instagram are clearly a big part of this company’s business model. When I was there on my second visit, I heard the cashiers talking about some big time influencer who was due to stop in soon with his entourage. Not to mention the design and blue/pink lighting throughout is as on trend as it gets.

They also have expanded with more locations and a bakery across the street serving up equally eye-catching croissants and such.

But how is the pizza? Well, I’m sad to say it is rather irregular.

On my first visit, I overlooked the scene-stealing burrata slices (with an entire burrata on top!!) and went with something I prefer eating: a mushroom slice.

And the one here was great. A bit expensive at $6.50, but nice and crisp with a good variety of earthy mushrooms, a kiss of umami from Pecorino Romano, and a slight butteriness from the cheese. It was very satisfying.

My second visit, however, was not as impressive. I still stayed away from the over-the-top burrata and this time kept it somewhat traditional with a slice called the Grandma Peppina, somewhat of a cross between Roman-style and a New York grandma slice.

It looks great but was a bit of a mess. I love a crisp browned crust, but this one was burnt and had some undesirable charcoal notes. It was also a bit gummy and soft and tasted like it was gluten free or made from rice flour. What happened here?

The acidic tomato sauce was nice and the cheese was fine, but something went wrong with the base of the entire thing.

I am by no means ready to write off Unregular. I enjoyed the burrata croissant across the street and probably should try the similar slice here. But for now, the pizza (especially the grandma) was a bit strange.

When they call this place Unregular, I doubt they meant inconsistent, but that was my experience. It could be a hit or a miss. But at least it’s not regular.

Is Unregular Pizza the best pizza in NY? It’s truly all over the place and gets a 7 out of 10 for having both very good slices and ones that are a complete disaster.

  1. I tried this place out earlier this year. I was super hungry and had 3 different slices (including the burrata). I have to agree with the assessment. I also had the mushroom, and it was lovely. The burrata was just _too_ much. The third was something was veggies, and it was a soggy mess.

I like the concept, but it seems to be mostly targetting visuals instead of quality.

  2. Yeah that unfortunately seems to be the trend lately. Have you been to their bakery across the street? I thought their burrata croissant was quite good, but also another target for social media.
