DISH OF THE WEEK: Fennel Pollen Cocktail at MACE

I have been sorely out of tocuh with the craft cocktail scene as of late. Before COVID, I was on top of it, even leading cocktail tours. Boy, I miss those days!

Well, when we had a night out for my birthday without our well-under 21 year old son, a cocktail bar was in order.

Mace is one that I am very well-aware of, having been open since 2015. It has since bounced around to a few other storefronts before most recently landing at the former location of Existing Conditions in Greenwich Village.

The space feels pretty much the same as what was here before, but the menu is all Mace’s. The concept has always been building cocktails around a specific (and often rare) spice or herb. I love it!

For this visit, I was drawn to the Fennel Seed cocktail, which was as smooth and rich as I was hoping. With a base of rye whiskey subtly washed with the namesake seed, rich and fruity sherry, herbal green strawberry vermouth, and nutty pistachio bitters, it was a very pleasant complex sipper that reminded me why I love spending time inside these cocktail dens. Price: $18.50
