The number of exciting new Thai restaurant openings continues. It’s amazing how much the Thai scene has expended in this city in just a few years.
We’ve always had good Thai options, but it’s gotten a bit difficult to keep up lately. In the best possible way.
One of my new go-to recommendations for a lunch in Midtown or affordable dinner before a Broadway show is Mitr Thai. Located on the east side of Sixth Avenue, it’s nestled among other newly opened restaurants worth checking out.
The place was slamming when I visited for lunch, but I found a seat at the bar to check out their lunch specials.
In addition to some tasty stir-fried noodles, I was intrigued by an appetizer of chicken skewers that was not the expected chicken satay.
Gai Gor Lae are two sticks of barbecued chicken topped with a red curry paste. This is a popular dish in southern Thailand that I must have overlooked on previous menus.
As tender and flavorful as you’d expect from chicken marinated in coconut milk, the intensely flavored and balanced red curry sauce made this very unique. It was spicy and salty with a hint of sweetness.
Of course, this is just one dish to try at Mitr Thai, but it’s always exciting to find some new dishes like this in NYC’s ever-growing Thai food scene. Price: $12
