BEST NYC DISH OF THE WEEK: Breakfast Panini from BEE’S KNEES PROVISIONS

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I’ve had lots of variations of breakfast sandwiches, but when it comes to the egg it really only fluctuates between scrambled and fried. Maybe poached or steamed. The sandwich at Bee’s Knees provisions really shocked me when I found out the egg was… hard-boiled.

Bee’s Knees Provisions recently rose from the ashes of the much missed and beloved Stinky Brooklyn. The cheese shop feel victim to COVID in the very early days, but will always be remembered as a pioneer in the neighborhood for its well-curated food selections (with cheese being the showcase) and commitment to local products.

The new place is a bit different since it also acts as a restaurant and wine bar with a focus on cheese, a small selection of local provisions up front, and as an homage to the former tenant.

I was very excited to see business thriving in this space once again and I was even more excited to try one of their breakfast offerings.

The breakfast panini didn’t look at all like I had expected. It is indeed grilled with crisp browned lines across the bread. However that bread is an irresistible pretzel roll rather than the usual ciabatta.

The surprises kept coming as the aforementioned hard-boiled egg took center stage, followed by crisp red peppers, arugula, and a tangy basil pesto. Two other important players in this sandwich are a well-selected gruyere cheese and a slightly smoky delicate coppa in place of bacon.

It was a very unexpected twist on a breakfast sandwich that was delicious and made me question the definition of a breakfast sandwich. Fitting for a place that pays homage to the past while also marching confidently into the future. Price: $15
