Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
If you haven’t tried a Scandinavian cardamom bun before, by all means, you should order and indulge in the one from La Cabra. Is it better than the aromatic pillowy ones from Fabrique or Smør? Hard to say, but I will say they are definitely just as good.
They’re becoming a hip bakery staple in Lower Manhattan and they’re really delicious. Worlds better than anything you’ll find at Cinnabon.
But while the masses are waiting in line at the fast expanding Danish import La Cabra for the cardamom buns, fancy coffees, and more, I took a big risk by just ordering a plain seeded bun. Truth be told, I didn’t want a big sweet gutbomb but rather an affordable snack. I got a whole lot more than I had anticipated.
Also used as a vessel for small sandwiches at the shop, this heavily seeded little bun rivals the city’s best everything bagel.
Along with a crisp exterior and an amazingly soft chew, this roll also had a very deep flavor of grains and malt. And each crunch from the variety of seeds was incredibly addicting.
My plan was to only have a few bites and save the rest for a later time. I think I made it four blocks before the entire thing was gone.
So yes, try the cardamom bun (I did and it’s great), but don’t be scared off by the less flashy little seeded bun sitting behind the counter. Price: $4
