Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
Considering how close some of the other major east coast cities are, it’s crazy that I rarely take city excursions. Usually when I’m in Philadelphia or Boston or DC, I’m just driving through.
Last week we spent a little bit longer (but not much) in the country’s capital. We spent two nights to break up a road trip down to North Carolina and also so my son could see the panda bears at the acclaimed Smithsonian National Zoo.
But before and after the pandas, we had to check out some of the food scene.
Our time and options were limited, but we did get a few good bites (like at the acclaimed Federalist Pig).
I was not expecting much at our brunch at Unconventional Diner, which is probably named for the nearby Convention Center.
It’s a huge space with an extra outdoor eating area as big as a city block. The brunch menu was indeed a bit unconventional with just a few egg options and lots of other gut-bomby offerings.
I took a risk and ordered light with a Lebanese Fried Rice dish that turned out to be much more flavorful and filling than anticipated.
This beautiful bowl reminded me of the Bulgur Fried Rice Sojuk at Brooklyn’s Boutros. Similarly, this unique plate featured deeply flavored rice with bits of crunchy lentils brightened by some pickled beets and tangy yogurt. A very satisfying fried egg on top ensured that I would not leave hungry.
While I’m sure this place gets lots of acclaim for their chicken and waffles, buttermilk pancakes, and other hearty options, they also do this unique light brunch dish plenty of justice.
And I know this is just one example of the exciting food options in D.C. We’ll have to return soon. I’m sure the pandas will be happy to see us. Price: $18
