DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: “Chor Moung” Purple Blossom Dumplings at THE NUAA TABLE

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Chor Moung is a traditional Thai dumpling from central Thailand that somehow manages to naturally check all the boxes for the modern Instagram-set. It’s colorful, in a pretty shape, and also happens to be worth recommending. Especially the ones at The Nuaa Table.

This lovely intimate Thai restaurant elevates the cuisine to a place that both showcases tradition but also gets very inventive. The interior is modern and comfortable, but the tables out front provide a showcase to some serious people watching along the mostly pedestrian Vanderbilt Avenue.

We had a really delicious meal here – I really liked the jasmine tea-soaked BBQ ribs that hinted at American style barbecue with a unique undertone of Thai flavors. And the rack was served with addicting spicy basil French fries. Holy basil indeed!

But none of the dishes were quite as beautiful as the aforementioned Chor Moung. Get a load of this….

Just look at those beautiful flower shaped purple dumplings. Wow, right?

My adrenaline raced with the excitement of capturing such a photogenic dish. That being said, I’ve  gotten used to overly pretty food being less than toothsome. Not the case here.

The vibrant dumpling skins dyed indigo from butterfly pea flower were plump and soft and taste just as good as they look. Inside was a sweet mixture of minced chicken, pickled radish, garlic and peanuts. The peanut flavor was pronounced and then tamed with a hint of chili.

Even if these weren’t exquisite to look at, they still would be a delight to eat. Could the ancient Thai royals who loved this dish somehow had an eye for Instagram? If so, they deserve millions of followers!! Price: $11
