DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF WEEK: Green Chile Breakfast Burrito at SANTA FE BK

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I remember when I was younger and a huge movie buff, there was this phenomenon (or marketing plan) that two movies about the exact same subject would be released by separate studios within weeks of each other. I’m thinking of Armageddon/Deep Impact, Volcano/Dante’s Peak, Antz/A Bug’s Life. And the list actually goes on and on.

So is the same phenomenon true of restaurants in NYC? Somewhat. Food trends come in this city and hit strong. Some stick around and same fade. This time around it is New Mexico breakfast burritos.

Last week I raved about the James Beard Award nominated Ursula in Crown Heights. This week on the other side of the borough, I discovered a similar concept in Williamsburg. Santa Fe BK has opened much more recently and has a larger space that is now open for full dinner service.

The morning I arrived, the breakfast burritos were available via a takeout window. Just like at Ursula, the focus is on burritos slicked with the famous New Mexico hatch chiles. You can choose to add sausage, bacon, or potatoes.

All burritos get the green chile treatment which adds a bit more heat than the red ones I tried at Ursula.

These flour tortillas are thinner but no less stuffed. They made a bit more of a mess than the ones from Ursula, but that is by no means a fault.

This was a delicious cousin to the famous BEC. All the components of a bacon, egg, and cheese were here, but in a less bulky vessel and with the addition of some fresh juicy chiles.

So much flavor leaked out from every bite. The success of this other New Mexico breakfast burrito makes me want to return for dinner to try all the other New Mexican specialities (namely the green chile burger).

Box office receipts for those “twin” movies show that Braveheart clearly beat Rob Roy and Turner & Hooch beat K-9, but I am not going to crown a winner here. It’s worth it to taste both of these delicious chile-laced breakfast bombs and decide for yourself. Price: $9
