Eat This DISH OF THE WEEK: Matzo Ball Consommé at EDITH’S EATERY & GROCERY in New York City

SADLY, EDITH’S EATERY & GROCERY IS NOW CLOSED.

As we have just another few days of Passover and only (hopefully) another few days of chilly weather, I thought the pick this week was very appropriate.

It comes from a new Jewish grocery and restaurant in the middle of Williamsburg. Following their very popular nearby bagel and sandwich spot, this new location feels like a precious hipster-sized version of Zabar’s.

The store is very clean, spread out, and stocked with some exciting products. There is also a back room with cookbooks on display and coffee and Jewish pastries on offer.

I am intrigued by much of the menu, which is a little high priced, but would be worth it for a sit down meal.

Instead, I did a quick take out of something that I was craving on a recent chilly afternoon: their take on matzo ball soup.

The star of this version if you ask me is the incredible consommé. As good as any nearby bone broth shop, the chicken soup was complex, rich, and full of rustic notes. Bobbing along were crisp bits of celery and carrots. It cured any ailments or anxiety I might have been feeling.

Accompanying the broth was peppery roasted chicken that was so tender it practically disintegrated into the liquid.

Of course there were also two balls of matzo. These were a bit bigger than a golf ball but smaller and more compact than a baseball. Unfortunately, these were the only misstep in the soup. Although flavorful, tasting of dill, matzo and chicken fat, I found the balls to be rather gummy and a bit dense.

Even though the matzo balls were less then perfect, the curing broth made up for any slight imperfections. I am sort of secretly hoping for one more cold day this spring – only to warm up with this again! Price: $9-$16
