DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Black and White Doughnut at AS YOU ARE

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I’m hoping 2022 is the year I start eating indoors again at hip new restaurants like As You Are. I came here recently to get a breakfast sandwich and a treat to go. But I looked around at the buzzing hotel restaurant and I was jealous of all the people less risk-averse than myself.

And it wasn’t just the restaurant that had the vibe I once remembered so well. The entire lobby of the brand new Ace Hotel in Brooklyn had both guests and cool locasl hanging out, socializing, and making deals.

I used to hang out in similar ways at the Ace Hotel in Manhattan when I used to hang out inside four walls. Now I just duck in to these places to try the food.

The food I tried at this buzzy restaurant included the pretty decadent breakfast sandwich, which had an authentic Jersey flavor thanks to a giant slice of Taylor ham (think the best bologna imaginable) and one absolutely brilliant doughnut.

Off to the side of the dining room is a counter serving coffees and seductive pastries. I was most intrigued by the Black & White doughnut, which looked like one of New York’s iconic dishes in fried dough form.

It was a lovely doughnut on its own – freshly fried and yeasty – yet it was the innovative spin that made it unforgettable.

A glaze of that sweet white frosting provided a base for a patch of chocolate ying to the white’s yang. But the homage doesn’t end there. Inside the doughnut is a segmented tasting of chocolate and vanilla ganache.

It was exciting, surprising, and endlessly delicious. And let’s hope those are all words we will use to describe 2022 and the New Year. Price: $7
