DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Bean and Cheese Taco at YELLOW ROSE

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

In theater school many moons ago, my friend and I were doing a scene from Of Mice and Men that required us to eat beans out of a can. It was possibly the most difficult acting experience I ever had.

Beans (especially out of a can) were one of the few foods I had a hard time getting down. Not sure why but I never really liked beans in just about any form.

So it’s pretty amazing that I now find myself actually ordering legumes off a menu. I must be getting old. What’s next, prunes?

Despite any possible dislike of beans, I assure you that this is one of the things you must order at Yellow Rose.

A few months back by, I visited this new Tex Mex favorite for a quick meal of breakfast tacos. They were all pretty good, but it wasn’t until I came back more recently and ordered the seemingly simple bean and cheese taco that I think I finally understood the appeal of Tex Mex.

While the flour tortilla slicked with refried beans and barely melted cheddar didn’t look terribly appealing, it had rich earthy comforting flavors and was incredibly satisfying.

The refried pinto beans, that I may have once been terrified of, were creamy and rich providing lovely textures and an earthy slightly spiced flavor. This held up beautifully to the chewy flour tortilla and the sharp cheddar cheese.

It was really great. And the fact that beans were the main highlight of the taco and I had this reaction says a lot about Yellow Rose. It also says a lot about my growth as an eater. Price: $4
