DISH OF THE WEEK: Upside Down Slice at NY PIZZA SUPREMA

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

After I wrote about the excellent cheese slice hidden in plain sight at NY Pizza Suprema just outside of Penn Station, I had a pizza friend reach out to me asking if I tried the “Upside Down Slice?” How did I miss it? One more pizza specialty hidden in plain sight.

When I re-visited NY Pizza Suprema, I now noticed an entire array of different pizza options. I guess last time I was either on such a mission or in a hurry or just oblivious.

Once again, I knew what I wanted and I ordered in quickly. It didn’t seem like others in the lunch line were quite as savvy to this unusual sounding slice. Either that or a fresh pie had just come out. Either way, I was one lucky pizza eater.

This was a crisp square slice in the world of grandma-style. And as you can imagine, the upside down name comes from the fact that the cheese is on the bottom and the tomato sauce is on top.

This on its own is not so unusual, but it’s done with such perfection here. The cheese melts into the crisp dough and creates a rich satisfying experience. Thanks to gravity, the chunky sweet and herbal tomato sauce is present in each pull of cheese. And a bit of pecorino on top adds a nice sharpness to the slice.

It really is a great slice and I’m kicking myself I missed it the first time around. But now I can only imagine how many other interesting slice options I missed because I only had my heart set on “the Upside Down”. Price: $4.50
