DISH OF THE WEEK: Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich at SAIGON SOCIAL

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I had deja vu all over again while eating an incredible Asian-inspired fried chicken sandwich at a newish hot spot on the Lower East Side.

That’s because a few months back, I had a similarly delicious dish and since I am still taking COVID precautions, had them put it in a to-go container and then went looking for a place outside to take a photo and enjoy it. Turns out, on this recent occasion, I found the same table to set the food down (along Allen Street) for a photo op and then walked down the same streets to attempt to eat the messy food as I walked.

Both times were logistical disasters but culinary successes.

This latest experience came from Saigon Social, which was due to open just before the pandemic in the former Mission Cantina location that had set empty for years. The restaurant finally opened for take-out in the midst of the COVID crisis and has now blossomed into a more full-fledged dining destination.

Their extensive menu of elevated Vietnamese comfort food was tempting all around. I really wanted to try the Bun Cha Ha Noi, which requires self assembly, but there were no outdoor tables available (it is a popular spot!) and I knew it would not be the easiest to eat on the go.

The famous fried chicken sandwich wasn’t much easier to consume in motion, but I managed to scarf it down without too much trouble and it was as amazing as everybody claims.

This fried chicken sandwich had deep chili notes (from cayenne and pickled jalapeño) and a pleasant makrut lime leaf herbaceousness. Both flavors helped balance the richness of the crisp buttery chicken thigh. The other ingredients were as expected in a Vietnamese sandwich: bright carrots, red cabbage, and daikon. Classic tater tots and a lightly grilled brioche bun round out the party.

If all the fried chicken sandwiches in the Lower East side are this good, I may just have to become a regular at that outdoor table on Allen Street. Price: $16
