DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Chocolate Chip Cookie from CHIP CITY

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

New York never changes. I would always discover some food place on a block I frequented often. It looked brand new and I had never seen it before but when I stopped in and asked how long they had been here, they tell me a few months or more. How did I miss them?

The city is so big and bustling that it was easy to miss something that had been there for a long time.

Now when I head back in (and it’s been much less frequently), I am not surprised to see new places (and sadly many that are no longer there). So when I saw this cookie storefront in the West Village along Bleecker Street (a street I would walk by often), I assumed they were brand new.

But once again, turns out they had been there almost two years and somehow I completely missed them. Takes a pandemic to open my eyes.

Thankfully I stopped in and had to pick up a cookie. Turns out they are related to a cookie business in Astoria (with other locations around the city) that I did visit a number of years back. And I remember their chocolate chip cookie being decadent and delicious. So what other choice did I have?

This is a style of chocolate chip cookie that can be found all over New York now. Is it a New York style? I would think most people give Levain Bakery credit for popularizing it and it has since taken the city by storm.

Chip City’s version is as expected. The giant specimen has a browned exterior and an ooey gooey buttery center. Semisweet chocolate chips are layered throughout and there is just a subtle touch of salt. There were no walnuts in this one, but they do offer that addition on certain days of the week.

If you follow the blog closely enough, you might remember I wrote about Ella Crown Bakehouse late last year. That was another new cookie business with a similar masterful product.

Don’t be surprised if I discover another one soon enough and you all hear about it. And it might be a brand new business or one that has been under my nose all this time. Price: $3.50
