DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Muffuletta at DOWNTOWNER in Jersey City, New Jersey

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I’m the most annoying customer. I was excited to try some of the sandwiches at Downtowner, but I should have known when I arrived late that their selection would be limited.

A few weeks earlier, I spotted a giant line down the block but couldn’t bring myself to wait for the sandwiches. But it piqued my interest even further.

Downtowner is connected to a great local butcher in Jersey City where I would get a lot of my fresh meat. It’s called Darke Pines. So I knew the meat sandwiches would be top notch.

When I did come late on a weekday afternoon, the only sandwich they had left was their Muffuletta. Generally, I’m not a fan of these cold sandwiches. I appreciate them but I was really craving something like their Pastrami or Meatball Parm.

I told the owner that I generally don’t like those and she deduced that I probably wouldn’t like this one. But I was hungry and eager to try something so I went with it. After all that.

She felt bad and I assured her not to feel bad that I made the choice and I would be fine. But she still insisted on giving me a free cookie. Which I tried to refuse but probably not hard enough.

I know that I’m a pain. And I expressed that to her as well. The cookie was delicious. But the sandwich… was even better.

I’m so glad things worked out the way they did because I would not have chosen this sandwich, but it ended up being the best thing I’ve had at Downtowner (I’ve since been two other times).

This muffuletta was one of the best cold cut sandwiches I’ve ever had. It featured rich porchetta, salty mortadella, and salami with a hint of spice. To balance it, there was a tangy creamy olive salad and delectable slices of sharp provolone.

It was really fantastic and the crisp sesame studded baguette held the entire thing together.

Sorry to the owner of Downtowner and thank you. Thank you very much! Price: $13
