DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Passionfruit Eclair at ECLAIR BAKERY

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

After a special outing in Manhattan, we figured we needed to get dessert. I let my son choose any of the eclairs at the adorable Eclair Bakery to share with me (this was our second dessert of the night so we had to go light). I would have picked one of the more decadent chocolate or hazelnut options, but he picked the passionfruit. Perhaps it was the flashy yellow color, but he went with it and I’m sure glad he did.

Picking out pastries at the bright interior of Eclair Bakery to enjoy outside amid the atmosphere of slowly cooling pandemic era New York, was actually refreshing. My few experiences eating out in the last six months have been mostly clouded with paranoia or car fumes. While we didn’t eat inside the boutique shop, we got to look around and smell the sugar and butter. And that was comforting to say the least.

My son chose correctly (perhaps there would have been no bad choice). I actually think the bright tanginess of the passionfruit flavor helped balance the eclair and prevent it from being too rich or decadent.

But it was certainly still luxurious with the sweet tart passionfruit cream bursting out of the buttery choux filling. Eclairs were one of my favorite desserts as a child and I never dreamed of having one as fun and surprising as this one.

I’d been wanting to check out this place for a while now and I’m glad that we sort of accidentally found our way here. The variety of eclairs (and other pastries) was intoxicating and I’ll have to come back to pick one for myself. Price: $5.75
