Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
Coffee and cookies. It’s not the immediate food combination that comes to mind, but it should be. Seriously, why don’t more people think to order a cookie with their coffee? I mean, scones and muffins are fair game at breakfast time, but cookies are taboo?
Well, after tasting Culture Espresso’s brilliant chocolate chip cookie, you’ll be realizing that this is a perfect pairing no matter what time of day it is.
I’ve been coming to Culture Espresso for years. It’s definitely my favorite craft coffee shop in that Midtown area, although the competition has grown since they first opened back in 2009.
Homemade cookies, it seemed, were part of the original plan but I don’t think they really hit it big until many years later. Perhaps the rise of Instagram helped. But for those in the know, these cookies have been considered among the best in the city for years.
I first discovered them while introducing a tour group to their great coffee. I finally gave in to the irresistible cookie aroma that always mingled in the air with the smells of freshly brewed beans.
I shared one with my tour group and we were all blown away. These might actually be the best chocolate chip cookies we had ever tasted.
Much more modest than Levain and more classic than the one at Maman, these are something to try.
They are not too thick but buttery and soft with big satisfying chunks of chocolate. And the best part is they literally bake them throughout the day so it is rare you will not get a cookie in your hand that is still warm from the oven.
Sorry, milk, but we really need to make cookies and coffee a thing. Price: $14
