Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
Most of the dishes I write about are specific to a certain restaurant here in New York. You could certainly try lasagna anywhere around the country (and in some places in Italy), but you can only try the Lasagna Bolognese at Tra di Noi in the Bronx.
This particular holiday-themed dish of the week is a little different. It comes from a series of holiday cocktail pop-up bars called Miracle. It all started six years ago at an amazing cocktail bar called Mace. They miraculously transformed into Miracle and it took things to another level in terms of the holiday spirits. Not only was the place decked out harder than the Home Alone house, but the thoughtful cocktails were curated around the holiday theme.
Since then, Miracle has popped up all over the world through a series of franchises that now reach close to 100 locations!!
There are three constants at the Miracles: the holiday decorations, the playlist, and the cocktails in specific glassware. So this drink is something you can get at any of the locations and it will look the same. Whether it tastes the same, is up to the individual bartender, so no guarantees.
Much of the menu is full of sweet or creamy or hot drinks. All appropriate for the holidays. I chose something that didn’t immediately fit into any of those above categories. And if I had any complaint about it, it’s that it wasn’t Christmas-y enough.
Named for a famous line from a surprising holiday movie (Die Hard), the Yippie Ki Yay Mother F****er is a year-round cocktail hiding in Christmas clothing. Literally.
Served tiki-style inside a cheeky Santa mug, this is a bright, smoky, spicy combination of nutty sherry, jalapeño-infused tequila, lime, celery bitters, and a pumpkin-almond orgeat. Aside from some warming nutty notes, it didn’t really taste like the holidays. But it sure tasted good.
It was a well-balanced bracing cocktail that was mellowed out by some of the added holiday cheer. If they had taken it out of the memorable mug and just served it in a regular goblet, I would have still been impressed. But for now it’s something you can only get at this time of year, but the good news is, you can very likely try it at a pop-up near you (through December 31). Price: $16
