DISH OF THE WEEK: American Globs at BIG GAY ICE CREAM SHOP

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

When I last wrote about Big Gay Ice Cream, I was just starting my ice cream expedition and the two owners had recently launched a soft serve truck that they transformed into the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck. They were also featured in my video about the best ice cream in New York.

Much has changed since then – especially for the Big Gay guys. They are now a sensation with three ice cream shops in the city and one in Philadelphia and Doug and Brian are minor food celebrities (and no, not because of my video).

And Instagram has taken over the food world. Their colorful and surprising ice cream combinations are ripe for the social media crowd, but when I looked at their menu, I was pleased to see not much has changed since the early days. They were already doing unicorns and sprinkles, so there’s that.

The tour company I work with recently launched an LGBTQ+ Tour around Greenwich Village (use UANYC1 for 10% off) that specifically supports businesses owned by members of the community. Big Gay is an obvious place to go and I was thrilled to have the chance to have another cone.

Of course, this month is both the World Pride celebration and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that sparked the beginnings of the gay liberation movement. Big Gay’s West Village shop is basically caddy-corner to where all the celebrations are happening at Sheridan Square.

I ordered a cone that I don’t think I have tried all those years ago. American Globs is a perfect combination of sweet, salty, creamy, and crunchy.

Vanilla soft served is rolled in pieces of crunchy salty chocolate pretzel shell and then dipped into a hard chocolate shell. Whenever I order soft serve, I like to have it dipped into hard chocolate and topped with crunchy cookie pieces. This is a variation on that but might be even better because the pretzels add a salty element.

I can’t believe I missed this combo over the years but what better time and place to enjoy it and celebrate it than during this important and historic anniversary? Price: $5.74.
