Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
I found good dumplings at the posh Pinch Chinese a few months back when they opened, but was frustrated by the price and the prix-fixe menu. As good as the dumplings were, I never expected to return. Especially considering I know the spots a few blocks away to get dumplings just as good for a third of the price.
But I read about some unique dishes that Pinch is creating – especially at brunch and so I felt the need to fight off the tourists and trendy brunchers of Soho to give these a try.
I was torn between the Breakfast Dan Dan Noodles, the Ma Po Scramble and the Bacon Egg & Cheese Dumplings. In the end, since I am constantly leading an official dumpling search, the dumplings won out.
This was truly a brilliant mash-up of Chinese dumplings and the classic American breakfast combination, The fried dumpling skins were nice and taut but with a thin tenderness. Inside, it didn’t look like much (I couldn’t see the bacon), but it tasted like the most luxurious egg sandwich with rich cheese and smoky bacon notes in each bite.
Also on the plate was a spicy Sriracha sauce with scallions garnished around. I’ve never had dumplings quite as interesting as these. And while I might balk at paying so much for a food that is so cheap in Chinatown, I’m more than willing to fork over Soho prices for something this unique and delicious. Price: $12
