DISH OF THE WEEK: Coconut Queso Quesadilla at JAJAJA PLANTAS MEXICANA

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Jackfruit tacos – if you’ve never had them, they are worth trying. The tropical fruit turns pork-like in texture when cooked and is a dead ringer for carnitas or al pastor tacos.

This post is not about a jackfruit taco although the ones at the hip and unique vegan Mexican restaurant are some of the best out there.

Those are what I thought I would be writing about when I placed my order. Instead the real wow dish for me were the cheesy but not cheesy coconut queso quesadillas.

I’ve had nut cheeses before but never coconut cheese. There was a creamy richness to the griddled quesadillas. Amazing there was no dairy product present.

They were stuffed with soft tender meaty king mushrooms and were supported by all the strong flavors you’d expect with a quesadilla – things like garlic, pico de gallo, serrano pepper, and basil. Everything was fresh and bright and made up an incredible quesadilla. One of the best I’ve ever had.

But next time try the jackfruit tacos. Price: $12

  1. You’re finding all of the great stuff lately!! We tried to eat at Jajaja twice before finally just going for a really early dinner to avoid a crazy wait. I’m dying to get back there and will have to try this. I had the chayote tacos which are amazing, and a few bites of my friend’s enchilada with mole sauce- also amazing. We were talked into the nachos to start, and they’re certainly worthwhile – went very well with a lovely mezcal cocktail- but also took up valuable tummy space, there’s so much more the of the menu i want to try!
