DISH OF THE WEEK: Tofu Fried Tofu at SUPERIORITY BURGER

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

If there’s still an argument that all vegetarian food is healthy, let this post put an end to that. But as we know, the things that we should eat in moderation, are usually the tastiest.

Superiority Burger has been really stretching the imagination when it comes to vegetarian fast food. I’ve had an addicting burnt broccoli salad here, a stellar take on a philly cheesesteak made with yuba, and fantastic gelato.

Now I’ve discovered they make a special on Monday nights that could easily be swapped for any of the city’s best fried chicken sandwiches and I’m willing to bet the pickiest carnivore would not even blink an eye.

The Tofu Fried Tofu sandwich looks, feels, and tastes as close to chicken a you can imagine. I think a good deal of the magic is in the seasoning that is dredged on the coating. It’s peppery, garlicky, and reminiscent of a true fried chicken breast.

The tofu (which I often don’t order outside of Asian restaurants) is marinated in some special juicy concoction that makes it emulate a fast food fried chicken sandwich. Topped with cole slaw, it’s truly a masterpiece. Not just because it tastes like something it’s but because it taste darn good.

And despite the fact that it’s completely vegan, I imagine my doctor would rather I only eat one once in a while. Good thing it’s only available once a week. Price: $7

  1. Their burnt broccoli salad really is unforgettable! I stop by here more often in the summer – his vegan gelatos are like no other. I had no idea about this sandwich!! Obviously i will have to make a point of going on a monday.
(And although certainly vegan doesn’t = healthy, there are apparently people out there who eat chicken fried steak which i suspect is even worse for you than chicken fried tofu 😉
