DUMPLING REVIEW in New York: Northern Tiger

My search for the best dumplings in New York continues….

SADLY, NORTHERN TIGER IS NOW CLOSED.

I like to think I’m immune to it but I too can be suckered into blackboard signs listing some seemingly good deal. That’s what happened at Northern Tiger, the Chinese option in the food hall Hudson Eats.

I was looking for a quick snack and Northern Tiger had a big sign listing they had a Happy Hour for their dumplings. 6 dumplings for 6 dollars.

Maybe it was because I was hungry or maybe it was because I was in an overpriced food hall, but something in me got excited and thought this was a good deal. Considering most of the dumpling houses I review on this site sell their dumplings for a third of that price, I realized that the Happy Hour did not make me so happy after all.

It might have been different if the dumplings were something worth writing home about but they were largely mediocre. They were served lukewarm in doughy wrappers that easily hid the filling inside.

That filling consisted of heritage pork (whatever that means) and chives, which is the traditional filling. Unfortunately, it wasn’t terribly flavorful and the dumpling sauce, whose job it is to provide an extra zip, failed. It didn’t have any zing and tasted mostly of soy sauce. I was also surprised by the shape of the dumplings. This is not what I understand northern Chinese dumplings to look (or taste) like.

If the price was right or the dumplings were better,  perhaps the blackboard was giving some good ideas. But as is, you should had a little north to Chinatown and get an all day Happy Hour for some incredibly cheap (and tasty) dumplings.

Does Northern Tiger  have the best dumplings in NY? If they roll out different ones for the non Happy Hour special, I might be willing to try again but they get a out of 10, for expensive mediocre dumplings even during their Happy Hour special.

  1. Ugh! Those look exactly like the overpriced crummy thick skinbland veggie dumplings my neighborhood chinese delivery has on the menu. But at least those came with some black vinegar for dipping.
I used to walk over to Mandoo bar when i lived closer to K-town, they make them in the window and although they’re not especially cheap they are very flavorful and they have lots of different filling options.
