HOT DOG REVIEW: Santa Salsa

My search for the best hot dog in New York continues….

Smorgasburg completely overwhelms me. I often stop by at the weekly Brooklyn food festival for a quick cheap bite before one of my tours. But it’s never quick and never cheap. It takes me a long time to navigate the crowds and find something interesting to eat in a sea of overpriced and predictable food vendors.

Lately I only visit once or twice a year to check out any new options that might be of interest. This year I found a vendor called Santa Salsa, which has a focus on Venezuelan food and has a second location out in the Rockaways, and a third from the back of a bar in Williamsburg.

I was craving some tube meat so their grilled hot dog, called Perro con Todo, sounded promising and intriguing. It’s topped with onions, cabbage, cheese, potato chips, and something called sweet corn sauce.

It sounded much more interesting than it ended up being. But the toppings were good with a nice play of textures and sweet flavors taming the salty, snappy meat. This is another win for Latin American-style hot dogs.

They may not be as unique as the sadly shuttered Chilean Los Perros Locos, but for now they are a fair replacement. Hopefully there will be more hot dogs like these in the future and they will make my Smorgasburg experience less painful.

Does Santa Salsa have the best hot dog in NY? They’re a good way to get your Latin American hot dog fix with crunch and sweet creamy sauce.7 out of 10.
