PIZZA REVIEW: Fiore’s Pizza

My search for the best pizza in New York continues….

FIORE'S PIZZA, 165 Bleecker Street (between Thompson and Sullivan Street), Greenwich VillageSome people (like my friend Jason and myself) dream of eating pizza, while others dream of owning a pizzeria. That was the case for firefighter Mike Fiore.

In Tribute

Sadly, Mike did not live to see the opening of Fiore’s. He was one of the brave men who perished in the attacks of the World Trade Center. In his honor, his friend Steve Cunningham turned Mike’s dream into a reality. And thus Fiore’s was born on Bleecker Street.

It’s been somewhat of a staple in the neighborhood since it opened in 2012, but I don’t spend a whole lot of time in this area (certainly not late at night when most people are craving a slice) so it’s sort of slipped my radar. I figured it was time to change that.

Typical Slice Joint

Fiore’s is your typical quick slice take-out joint. No frills, but they offer both a thin crust round slice and a square grandma’s style. I wanted to see how their traditional gas-oven slice stacked up to the other stalwarts (like Joe’s and John’s) a few blocks west.

Cheese Slice at FIORE'SIt was a pretty good slice. Its ultra-thin crust maintained a nice crispness but I thought it could have use a bit more char on the edges. The cheese was fine, but I found the sauce rather sweet. It was definitely fresh, but I would have prefered some basil or spices to balance out the sweetness.

Thin Crust Indeed

I’m not sure Fiore’s is worth travelling for, but if you’re in the immediate area, this is a decent slice. Needless to say, there are better options just a few blocks away. But nonetheless, Mike Fiore would be proud.

Is Fiore’s Pizza the best pizza in NY? It doesn’t quite compare to its nearby competition but it’s a worthy thin-crust slice that will certainly do in a pinch. 6 out of 10.
