Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Food Cart Tour is my exploration of the hard-working vendors feeding NYC’s population every day.
Sadly, this is the first time in 5 years where I will not be able to attend the annual Vendy Awards. Family obligations will keep me away from New York on September 13. However, I get to experience the nominated vendors up close and personal.
With the help of Turnstile Tours (the company I lead food cart tours for), I’ve been commissioned to make videos on the nominees in three categories (Rookie, Market, and Dessert). That means I personally got to meet the nominees and taste their food. Without the crowds and heat. If you can’t be at the Vendys (like me), you can still experience the nominated vendors through these videos. Here are the first three:
Big D’s Khao Cart
Nominated for Rookie of the Year, Dennis Kum has expanded his food truck into a cart that specializes in Asian rice dishes (khao). Check out some of the mouthwatering food that he serves on 50th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue.
Bolivian Llama Party
The Oropeza brothers are bringing an under-represented cuisine to New York via Smorgasburg and Rockaway Beach. They’re representing their Bolivian heritage by adding modern twists to chola sandwiches and salteñas. A nominee for Market Vendor of the Year
Alchemy Creamery
A group of lactose intolerant friends are making ice cream safe for all dietary restrictions. Their petite cart is nominated for Best Dessert and makes the rounds at Smorgasburg and Governor’s Island offering up dairy-free treats.
