DISH OF THE WEEK: Matcha Crepe with Red Bean Cream at TAKAHACHI BAKERY

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Paris and Japan meet cute at Takahachi Bakery. This corner shop in Tribeca is one of those places you could walk by dozens of times and somehow miss the delightful surprises inside.

If you were always curious about strange sweet flavors like green tea and red bean, this is the perfect spot to take the plunge and give them a try. They make it easy to give in since the pastries on display look so inviting. I actually came here for a coffee meeting and thought maybe I’d have a cookie or two, but the adorable matcha crepe called my name like a puppy dog waiting to be adopted.

The pastry was wrapped in a cute faux newspaper, which I wished was edible. It was not. But the delicate dough and the red bean cream that waited inside sure were.

Bright green matcha powder dusted the crepe giving it an extra boost of flavor. Inside, cold creamy sweet red beans continued the unusual marriage. The dessert wasn’t too sweet, but the unique pastry and flavorful cream gave this dessert an refined decadence. For better or worse, this place will no longer just be a window on my walk to the train.
