I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2017…

Translating to “little potato pan”, you can get a good sense of what these loaded skillets consist of. On their own, they are the best hash browns you’ll ever had with a generous portion of bacon and onions. It comes topped with your choice of hearty German meats. I was very happy with a pair of caraway-kissed Nürnberger bratwurst.Price: $15.95-$23.95

Welcome to a new segment on this blog. On Mondays get ready for a quick list of the best restaurants, dishes, or food trends in a certain category. There are so many great things to eat and drink in the city and think of this as your resource to find the absolute best.

If you look around the city this week, it seems that every bar wants to be German. Blue and white flags are everywhere, waitresses wear traditional garb are outside taking a smoke break, and the faint sound of an oompah band can be heard on just about any street.

It’s Oktoberfest! Perfect time to celebrate and soak up German culture. But make sure you find your way to an authentic German bar or restaurant and not get stuck at an Irish bar in disguise. Here are the seven best German bars in NYC (in no particular order): (more…)

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

INCA'S GRILL PERUVIAN CUISINE, 2110 Clove Road (between Crist Street and Giles Place), Grasmere, Staten IslandIt’s been less than a month since I returned from my adventure in Peru and I still can’t get enough of the food. I even spent the last few weeks eating the diverse food again here in NYC for an article on Gothamist.

One of the uncovered Peruvian restaurants in the city sits in a suburban neighborhood of Staten Island. I had read about it and so just like all our travels in Peru, I decided to jump on a ferry and headed out to the most far-flung borough to visit Inca’s Grill. (more…)

My search for the best pizza in New York continues….

LEE'S TAVERN, 60 Hancock Street (at Garretson Avenue), Dongan Hills, Staten Island

I could spend months searching for the best pizza on Staten Island alone. Some people (mostly Staten Islanders) claim the borough is home to the city’s best. I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve only been to a handful of the pizzerias there, but little by little, I’m setting things right.

Lee’s Tavern has always been high on my list, but when I met somebody from Staten Island who urged me to add it to my bucket list, I decided to move it to the top. A bucket list seems a bit morbid at this point – I’m just going to eat pizza!

You immediately understand why it’s called Lee’s Tavern and not Lee’s Pizza. This place is a total dive bar. I never in a million years would have wandered into this unmarked bar and attempted to order a pizza. The bar itself was lined with big guys in baseball jerseys, the atmosphere was dark and dingy, and there was a faint smell of urine in the air. Was I really in the right place?

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

IMG_4805

People think I forget about Staten Island when I say we now have a brewery in every single borough of New York. I haven’t forgotten about the forgotten island. There is indeed a brewery on the island and any beer drinker who lives on the fifth borough should know about it by now. For those of us that don’t ride the ferry very often, it’s an exciting discovery.

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

LAKRUWANA, 668 Bay Street (at Broad Street), Stapleton, Staten IslandMost people think Staten Island is only good for one thing – a free ferry that takes you by the Statue of Liberty. Casual foodies also know there’s some mighty serious pizza out on the forgotten borough. But it’s only the most hardcore and adventurous of food lovers who have been out to visit the rough neighborhood of Tompkinsville.

This (and nearby Stapleton) is where you can find Little Sri Lanka. In fact, a third of the Sri Lankan population in this country resides out here. So you better believe if there’s authentic Sri Lankan cuisine to be had, this is where you can find it.
