I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2017…

As a kid, I was pretty averse to whitefish salad. As an adult, I realized how wrong I was. Or at the very least I had never tasted the stuff at Shelsky’s. The chunky meaty whitefish has an irresistible smokiness and creaminess. The fish pieces melt in your mouth and are nicely broken up by bits of crisp celery. Price: $5.50/quarter pound

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

WAFELS & DINGES, 15 Avenue B (at East 2nd Street), East Village

I’ve been hopelessly in love with Wafels & Dinges since we first started working with the truck on our food cart tours 4 years ago. My exclamations to tour attendees that this truck will change your life has never been met with disappointment. They change lives!!

When their long-in-the-works brick and mortar café finally opened in the East Village a few weeks ago, I made a special trip to see the gang and sample some new menu items.

The bright storefront felt like a Belgian Disney World with edible treats at every turn. Remember, most people consider Disney World the “happiest place on Earth.” But those people have never been to Wafels & Dinges.

Now that I’ve eaten my way through somebody else’s list (Time Out New York), I’m ready to compile my own 100 spectacular things I’ve tasted in 2012. Look for another five dishes every few days.

NUMBER 55: HOT DOG at DOMINICK’S HOT DOG TRUCK

I’ve spent the last few years on this site dedicated to the foods that are most associated with New York. And there are so many iconic dishes, that the journey always continues for me. Some of these are classic bites, some are new versions, but all are deliciously New York.

Practically everybody who’s ever visited New York has tasted a hot dog from a mobile food vendor. And while most of those generic Sabrett carts throughout Midtown are probably more popular, they can’t compare to the perfect link I tasted from a big blue truck way out in the middle of Queens. Dominick’s has been serving steamed dogs for almost 50 years. Topped with mustard, peppery onions, and sauerkraut, the legendary street food bursts with juiciness and has a persistent salty meaty pop. Dominick’s dog may just be the most perfect version in New York. Price: $3
