I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

The brewery side of Dirck the Norseman has been consistently putting out bizzare creations that challenge the concept of beer. My favorite this year was this wonderfully roasty and super tart wheat beer that surprises with rich, woody coffee notes and a balancing lemon acidity. Price: $7

I love when I get approached with a food dilemma. And it’s even more rewarding when I can solve it and then be involved in the eating part too.

For Urban Adventures, we often put together customized food and history tours. And this particular project was a very cool tour of the changing Brooklyn waterfront. We started in Dumbo and ended in Greenpoint and we needed a place with a wide range of food options that could seat a large group on a weekday afternoon.

Esme, which I randomly stumbled upon a few months ago in the northern part of Greenpoint, immediately came to mind. And they were happy to have us.

BROOKLYN POUR 2015

One of my favorite events every year is Village Voice’s Brooklyn Pour. It’s a great way to explore and celebrate the ever-growing craft beer scene in New York City. So many local breweries have popped up in the last few years that it has become difficult for me to keep up.

Brooklyn Pour brings them to one place and with the purchase of a ticket, you can sample beers from them and over 25 different breweries from around the country. This year the event is moving from Fort Greene to the Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint and will take place from 3:00-6:00pm with early bird VIP ticket options available.

Breweries will include old-school local ones like Sixpoint, Singlecut, and Captain Lawrence right alongside the newer guys like Braven and War Flag Brewery. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the website here.

Come back every Wednesday for another funny, informative video documenting my inept food adventures. NYC Brewery Tour explores the growing craft brewery scene in the city and visits all the unlikely spots that are brewing fresh, delicious beer.

Throwing back to the old days, Dirck the Norseman (which is named for the first European settler in the north Brooklyn area) is a brewpub serving up hearty tavern food with fresh, housemade brews.

DIRCK THE NORSEMAN, 7 North 15th Street (at Franklin Street), Greenpoint, Brooklyn

When you have a brewery attached to your restaurant, as is the case with the new brewpub Dirck the Norseman, you have the best cooking ingredient you could possibly imagine. The only thing I could think of that might be more appropriate for cooking would be if the big room in the back was mining salt instead of brewing beer.

Many brewpubs take their beer and add it into mustard or steam mussels in it. Not Dirck the Norseman. Here they take Riegle Kellerbier (a German beer imported by owner Ed Raven) and use it for braising pig knuckle. Yes, I said pig knuckle.

Each Friday, I get a lesson in the NYC brewery scene in these funny and informative videos promoting Urban Oyster’s NYC Brewery Tour

I recently heard about the rustic bar/restaurant Dirck the Norseman on the border of Williamsburg and Greenpoint. It has a historic theme (named for this area’s first European settler) and serves elevated bar food like pig knuckle and short rib.

As I was about to dig into a monstrous chicken schnitzel, Meredith sneaks up on me and tries to convince me that this exciting restaurant also moonlights as a brewery called Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. where they make interesting and historic beer styles to pair with the hearty food.
