DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Cookies from RUBYZAAR

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

RUBYZAAR, Union Square Market, Thru Dec. 24A clothing and handbag kiosk in the middle of Union Square’s holiday market is not the most likely place to find delicious Christmas cookies. But Rubyzaar has proven us wrong for the last few years.

This pop-up shop is on the edge of the market (before you disappear into the chaotic mass of shoppers) and specializes in all fair-trade manufactured crafts. Sure, housewares, clothing, and bags. But cookies too.

Casbah from RUBYZAAR

A few years ago I discovered (and wrote about) their Ambrosia cookie which is a unique sweet-savory concoction of fig, pear, sage, and honey. This year, I went crazy for their Casbah. Dark chocolate and fresh mint is a perfect combination – and especially around Christmas.

Cookie, Cookie

But all of their cookies are well-balanced and feature real ingredients. And I haven’t even mentioned the perfect soft, chewy texture of the dough. As ethical as the merchandise at the stall, that’s how delicious the cookies are. Pick up a dozen. Santa will thank you.
