Black and White Cookie Black and White Cookies

BLACK AND WHITE COOKIE in New York: Donut Pub

THE SPOT: This 24 hour iconic doughnut shop has been on my radar for many years – not quite since 1964 when they opened, but close. It recently expanded to a second location near NYU, but the spot on 14th Street has always felt like a local dive. And inside it does feel like a local version of Dunkin’ Donuts and transports you out of New York to somewhere in New England, while also remaining totally of this city. I managed to resist the doughnuts and zero in on the black and white cookie.

THE BLACK: The frosting on both sides of the cookie was rather thin and more of a light spread than you’d expect from frosting. The chocolate didn’t taste terribly fudgy, toasty, or any of the flavors I associate with chocolate. It was just ok.

THE WHITE: I also didn’t think the white had much flavor either – certainly no vanilla from what I could discern. In fact, if I had closed my eyes, I don’t think I could have determined which bite was white and which was chocolate. These just tasted like a sweet glaze.

THE COOKIE: Thankfully, the excellent cake made up for the lack of excitement from the frosting. That is not usually the case with black and white cookies. But Donut Pub has a great soft, fresh cake with a nice browned crispness along the edges. It made it very easy to overlook the lackluster frosting which seemed like just an excuse to make a great black and white cookie base.

THE RATING: Despite the lackluster black and white frosting, the cake/cookie base was excellent. Sam liked it even more than me by giving it a 10 and I give it a solid 8 out of 10.
