ICE CREAM REVIEW in New York: Coney’s Cones

We brought our son to Coney Island for the first time this summer and I knew ice cream had to be part of the experience. You can’t be on the boardwalk in the summer without a cone in your hand.

The last time I was out here, the ice cream options were not great. I reviewed the now-closed Denny’s Delight, which was about as mediocre as it gets. But it still served a need. I never expected on this recent visit to find actually worthy ice cream.

Turns out Coney’s Cones, which now has a few little kiosks throughout Luna Park and a main storefront directly on the boardwalk, opened in 2015, the same year I visited the aforementioned Denny’s Delight. And they seem to have kept the quality up because the gelato we tried was really much better than it needed to be.

The hectic line moved pretty quickly and despite the madness, we were able to get a few samples of the limited ice cream flavors.

My son tried the Milano cookie flavor which was creamy with hints of chocolate only slightly reminiscent of the classic Italian cookies.

I sampled the Nutella, which was fantastic and worked the chocolate hazelnut flavor perfectly.

There was a flavor called the Cyclone, which seemed appropriate, so that was what I put in my cone. It was a really unique choice and one I quite enjoyed.

Rum ice cream swirled with raisins and hazelnuts was a boozy surprising treat, much like the neighborhood itself. I also appreciated the smaller portion and lighter prices. It’s been a while since I’ve had an ice cream cone in New York for under $6.

The soft creamy texture here is really phenomenal and the flavors are strong and innovative. It’s a very good gelato shop that both fits in and feels out of place on the wild Coney Island boardwalk.

Is Coney’s Cones the best ice cream in NY? It’s no doubt the best ice cream in Coney Island and for that, along with its interesting flavors and perfect creamy texture, it gets a solid 8.5 out of 10.
