PIZZA in New York: Nate’s Detroit Pizza

The buzz started when Nate Skid started popping up his new pizza business at local breweries. I had heard about Nate’s and figured one day I would actually give it a try.

Amazingly, I was wondering down Atlantic Avenue after a Brooklyn food tour and lo and behold, Nate’s had permanently popped up in the space that used to house Cobblestone Catering. Turns out they have been here a few months and somehow I missed it.

It’s an interesting space as it feels more like a pop-up kitchen (and in fact Cobblestone still uses this space) with a few tables set up around the kitchen.

Even though I wasn’t craving a slice, I figured I owed it to myself (and all of you?) to finally give this a whirl.

So, I’ve never been to Detroit and only tried this now famous style at spots in New York. So I am by far no expert. I just judge what I find delicious. And I find this quite delicious.

The cheese slice is a bit smaller than you expected and not nearly as thick or chewy as other Detroit-slices I’ve had. I read that Nate has said this is his version of Detroit pizza and it’s heavily influenced by New York slices.

It’s actually pretty light yet doughy. As expected it has that salty cheese crisp edge and a hit of acidity from the bright tomatoes. The cheese is hiding underneath the tomato and basil but it presented on every bite – not to mention a final tang from the shaved parmesan on top.

This is a great light slice, which is not something I normally say about Detroit-style pizza. It’s all a surprise – from the unexpected location to the light pizza And a very pleasant surprise at that.

Is Nate’s Detroit Pizza the best pizza in NY? It’s a unique spin on New York-Italian pizza with a focaccia like thickness and quality ingredients. An 8.5 out of 10 indicates it should be talked about with the best of them.
