Black and White Cookies

BLACK AND WHITE COOKIE in New York: Simply Nova

It does seem like nowadays the best place to get a black and white cookie is not at a German bakery, but rather at a Jewish appetizing shop.

The exciting Simply Nova tries to do it all when it comes to New York Jewish food from smoked salmon to pastrami sandwiches and, of course, black and white cookies.

Tempting me at the register, the individually wrapped black and white cookie was labelled homemade. So I just had to pick one up to share with my son (who is a lover of these cookies).

Sam had absolutely no criticisms with the small cookie and devoured it in a snap.

I found the cookie itself to be a little crunchy and dense – not as soft as I would have hoped. The overwhelming flavor was lemon, especially from the “white” side of the cookie. I picked up some very subtle cocoa notes on the black side, but the lemon overpowered a bit. It reminded me a bit of a frosted Italian lemon cookie. Price: $2.50

Does Simply Nova have the best black and white cookie in NY? This is a worthy attempt, but I found it to be a bit overwhelmingly lemony and not quite soft enough. 6 out of 10.
