CHEESECAKE in New York: AnnTremet Cake

Leave it to a kid on the verge of a meltdown to work their magic. I brought my nieces to check out the weird and wild cakes at AnnTremet, which is an adorable little bakery on a crooked street between Chelsea and the West Village.

I thought they would be happy with any one of the colorful cakes, but was really hoping for the stunning bunny cheesecake. I was told by one cashier that they didn’t have any available at the moment.

When nothing else seemed to appeal to my 7 year old niece, the tears started to well up when she realized she was not going to have a dessert. Those tears were magical somehow because one of the other employees went to the back and returned with the cutest little ball of cheesecake.

I had been wanting to try this here and was always told it was too frozen to eat right away. This time, with the help of two very excited little relatives, we managed to attack the bunny.

As you can see, all the clichés about it being too pretty to eat held true. My youngest niece was very hesitant to put a fork into the little creature, but upon reassurance from her parents, she managed to take the first stab.

It didn’t take long for this poor beautiful bunny to be completely destroyed. The cake was very reminiscent of light, airy Japanese style cheesecakes made with egg whites and cake flour. The girls couldn’t decide if there was a layer of cake to it or not.

The bunny, which was quickly turning into a mound of cream cheese had a very tangy flavor with a restrained sweetness. Despite the lightness however, this was super rich coating our mouths. The bunny’s revenge, perhaps?

It was a fun, beautiful cake to eat. Somewhere between a classic New York style and those ethereal Japanese ones, this was exciting. And it prevented a 7 year old from having a miserable time, so it gets points for that if nothing else.

Does AnnTremet Cake have the best cheesecake in NY? They certainly have one of the cutest and earn an 8 out of 10 for having a tangy light flavor underneath all that beauty.
