DUMPLING REVIEW: King Dumplings

My search for the best dumplings in New York continues….

I was not prepared for how pleasurable these cheap Chinese dumplings at King Dumplings were going to be. I should have known. I’ve had this style of jiaozi in Chinatown many, many times before, but I hadn’t realized just how long it had been and just how much I had missed them.

King Dumplings is probably the latest in a long line of cheap dumpling joints lining the streets of Chinatown. In the old days I would call these dollar dumpling joints, but those were the old days. It’s nearly impossible to find a plate for less than $2 these days.

King Dumplings offers their fried dumplings at $3 for a plate of 10. As much as I enjoy dumplings, I knew I wasn’t going to take down 10 of these. So I inadvertently started bargaining with the cashier. I asked for 5 dumplings and offered to pay the full price. I guess he thought I was haggling because he countered with 6 for $2. I told him I’d take 5 for $2. He was a bit surprised at my bargaining tactics (it really wasn’t about the money – I just didn’t want to waste the food) and we had a deal!

The dumplings looked ok but were much better than their flat appearance hinted at. They were hot and crisp without an abundance of grease. A soft chewy dough was a bit thicker than others but it held a hefty amount of irresistible meaty filling.

I’m not sure if King Dumplings are that transportive or I just really missed this style of dumplings. Either way, I was satisfied and very happy to have this new addition to the dumpling scene. Next up, I’ll have to try their steamed dumplings and sesame pancakes.

Does King Dumplings have the best dumplings in NY? They happily get an  out of 10 for a generous meaty filling and a chewy crisp dough that was a bit on the thick (but tasty) end..
