CHEESECAKE REVIEW: Egidio Pastry

My search for the best cheesecake in New York continues….

Normally when I do these food searches, it is just me and a camera. But every once in a while I get to share in the tasting.

I give tours along Arthur Avenue in the Bronx and have been bringing hungry groups to Egidio Pastry, which is my favorite spot for cookies in the neighborhood. I knew they made cheesecake but had yet to get around to tasting it.

Well, on a recent tour, a group decided they wanted to taste the cheesecake to see how it compared to the ones they made at home. These were my kind of people because they ordered both cheesecake options (Italian and NY-style) to see how they stacked up. And just like me, they wanted to share.

They both were really delicious. The Italian ricotta version had a bit more lemon than I expected and provided a pleasant tang throughout. After a brief layer of browned cake, the interior was creamy and decadent. No crust was necessary here.

New York style is generally more dense made with cream cheese. This one had a much lighter, airier texture but still had that nice cream cheese richness. The crust was a bit softer but held the heft of the treat.

Both were very impressive and are a worthy addition to the cheesecake search.

Meeting like-minded cheesecake adventurers is one more perk of giving these food tours. I know there’s many more of us out there.

Does Egidio Pastry Shop have the best cheesecake in NY? Both versions are solid contenders with a lemony tangy Itallian specimen and a creamy luscious New York version. Together they earn an out of 10.
