IT RESINATES (Sixpoint’s Resin)

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

I don’t think I’ve ever heard the word “resin” outside of referring to leftover bits of marijuana. And when Sixpoint released one of their newer can offerings and named it Resin, I assume it referred to the fact that the hop flower is closely related to the cannabis plant. And maybe there is some of that going on in the complex minds of the Sixpoint brewers. But the real definition of the word resin is a complicated scientific term that refers to a compound (often liquid) that comes from a plant. Think sap.

And after having tried Sixpoint’s Resin (which is only available by the 12 ounce can), I think the name is rather appropriate. The focus is definitely on the hops and thick viscosity.

It pours an almost burnt orange color with a healthy head and explosive effervescence. On the nose, the word that comes to mind is fresh – bright grapefruit, spices, and tropical fruits, especially pineapple. Lots of fruit notes were present. Upon touching the tongue, it starts mild and floral, but opens up to a complex hop bitterness. It has a sticky, heavy mouthfeel that lingers and allows you to enjoy its balanced freshness.

Resin, as it turns out, is actually a very enjoyable IPA-style beer with lots of bold flavors. I feel like drinking too many of them might overwhelm the palette and at a sneaky 9.1% alcohol, it’s clear why they put it in a smaller can.

Is Sixpoint Brewery’s Resin the best beer in NY? It’s a bold addition to their can collection and a very flavorful beer that’s perfect for any season earning a 9 out of 10.
