#67 – ICED COFFEE at FORT DEFIANCE

SADLY, FORT DEFIANCE IS NOW CLOSED.

I might be the only person out there who doesn’t drink coffee. Seriously. If there are any other caffeine-free folks out there, let me know and we should start a support group.

People look at me funny when I tell them I don’t drink the stuff. I just never got into it, man. I guess I hung out with the “good crowd” in high school and was never curious about it in college. All the other kids were doing it, but I like living in an unaltered reality. An exhausted unaltered reality, but still.

Now, of course, I’ve tried coffee and I actually like the taste. I usually can’t resist a frappucino and I think coffee ice cream is the most perfect of flavors. And every once in a while I’ll have an espresso or something after a nice dinner because I like the taste – and it seems like the cool thing to do. See? Peer pressure.

Well, it was mid-afternoon when we arrived in Red Hook for the first time. It was well after brunch and Fort Defiance was only serving coffee and drinks. Perfect. The first item on the list from Fort Defiance was their iced coffee.

The waiter told us that the drip coffee was put away for the day but he could make us an Iced Americano. I felt this wasn’t quite exact enough so we took one to go and I vowed to return (there was another item on the list here anyway).

A few days later, we made our way back to Fort Defiance for the deviled eggs and I had a real iced coffee this time. I’m not sure there was much of a difference between the two, but they were both tasty with just a hint of bitterness. The ice cubes (which Time Out mention) are bigger and melt slower so it keeps the coffee stronger for longer.

Due to my lack of experience, I’m not a coffee connoisseur but I could tell this iced coffee (they use Counter Culture) was the good stuff. Now let’s just hope coffee is not a gateway drug.

Would Fort Defiance’s Iced Coffee make my Top 100 of the year? It gets a 7 out of 10 because coffee is just not my thing, but this cup of joe tasted good and perked me up for the day.
